Go Gos! A Bra! Groovy!
Those who missed Saturday’s A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix concert, REALLY missed some groovin’ fun.  Not only was the music from Carl, B.C. and Hunter truly authentic, but lots of the on stage antics and audience behavior were reminiscent of those good ol’ days.  Among the highlights of the night:  a bra thrown on stage from an enthusiastic audience member, three well choreographed...

Guess Who's Coming Back?
A couple of years ago, it was a sad “farewell” to Mike Vouri’s The Life and Times of General George Pickett. He’d been performing the one-man show (with musician Mike Cohen) for years each summer on the Whittier stage but decided to retire the show. Well, it seems there’s just been too much interest in keeping the historical event going so Mike has agreed to return...

Workshop Worked!
This past weekend’s paint workshop with Hollywood art designer Michael Mayer (pictured below with volunteer Danielle Hoyer) went very smoothly.  Eight volunteers showed up—including Chris and Ann Nelson’s granddaughter, Kyla, visiting from Australia (also pictured below) to learn some great tips on stage painting and then to work those techniques on the upcoming Proof set.  They...

Enpointe in Carnivale
Lina Downes tells us that the Winter Carnivale’s Saturday and Sunday (this weekend, January 21-22) performances may be the last chance to see island ballerina Julie Hagn perform “enpointe” in Friday Harbor (remember her mesmerizing “can cans” during The Ladies Man?—pictured below).  Julie is a senior in high school and will be off to college in the fall.  Lina...

Hollywood Visitor...
Merritt, Steve and John have arranged for a Hollywood art director to visit next Saturday, January 21 and lead a paint workshop at the PARC Building.  Michael Mayer has worked on movies and such TV shows as Judging Amy, Bones and L.A. Law.  Wonder how we got him here?  Seems back in the day (1970s), Michael and Merritt were both part of a group called “The Deadbeats”—unemployed...

And the winner is...
During last’s night opening of Little Women (don’t forget, only three shows left through Sunday), Julie picked the winner of our drawing for a “Weekend in Seattle”.  Folks who donated to the Theatre between October and December 31 were eligible.  That was 152 households!  Congratulations to Chris and Betsy Pope —they won two tickets to attend a production at the...

Happy Lilo!
SJCT got its chance to honor Lilo (she was named “Citizen of the Year” last week in the Journal).  Tanja and Mary put together a framed article for Lilo, we grabbed a key lime pie from Market Chef and interrupted Lilo while she was working on programs in the conference room. Volunteers definitely rock around here…thank you Lilo and everyone else who keeps the Theatre going.

Lilo Rocks!
Guess who’s the San Juan Journal’s Citizen of the Year?  Not too hard to guess, I bet.  Lilo Rustmann, of course.  Theatre-goers will recognize her as the friendly face taking tickets or helping in concessions at most shows.  She also works behind the scenes helping Mary, Jan and Tanja with mailings, adding programs to each Playbill and so much more! Plus, the Theatre is not the only...

Hey! Look up!
Next time you’re in the SJCT Theatre lobby during an event (how about Little Women this Thursday through Sunday?), check out the new projection up on the wall.  The staff today (below) got a sneak peek of the new “lobby show” that promotes upcoming events at the Theatre.  Steve put most of this first one together and then he and Jan will start keeping it up to date in the...

Rehearsals are in the Air!
Wow…the Theatre sure is buzzing these days.  The high school kids have moved in for next week’s (January 12-15) production of Little Women  and the Gubelman is filling up with props and various rehearsals for the 2012 Islands Playwrights Festival (February 3 to 18).  In fact, we just heard singing coming from the conference room down the hall from one of those 12-minute plays in the...

Happy New Year!
It’s funny how sometimes when you leave the island for the holidays, you come back and nothing has changed.  Well, not this time.  2012 is starting off with some new event developments at the Theatre.  Jacki Altier’s January concert has been cancelled (she’s fine, it just couldn’t happen at this time for various reasons).  That changed The Tribute to Jimi Hendrix from...
